Breast pain, also known as mastalgia, is described as a mild sore pain or stabbing or throbbing kind of pain experienced in the breast region. Breast pain is categorized into two types: cyclic breast pain and noncyclic breast pain. Cycling breast pain is experienced due to hormonal changes in women in the twenty to fifty-year age group, during the menstrual cycle. Non-cyclic breast pain occurs in females above forty years, mainly because of benign breast conditions or breast size, birth control medications, hormone therapy, infections like mastitis, injury, inflammation, breastfeeding, and surgical scars. The presenting complaints of cycling breast pain are heavy, swollen, and tender or sore breasts, while the symptoms of non-cycling breast pain include sharp pain in one specific area of only one breast with stabbing and burning sensations.
