Heart Enlargement :
Heart Enlargement or enlarged heart medically termed as cardiomegaly is not a disorder by itself, but can be a symptom of an underlying condition. This enlargement of the heart is caused by various factors including chronic smoking, alcohol abuse, high blood pressure,diabetes,valvular heart disease, atherosclerotic disease, sleep apnea and cardiac arrhythmia. Individuals with heart enlargement either can be asymptomatic or present with symptoms like chest pain, chronic coughing, heart palpitations, edema ,fatigue, unexplained weight gain, and fainting. Many techniques and tests are used to determine heart enlargement including stress test, electrocardiogram, echocardiogram and others. Treatment mainly focuses on addressing the underlying condition involving pharmacological and surgical intervention.
