Glaucoma :
Glaucoma is a cumulative medical term for a group of the diseases affecting optic nerve, which results in vision loss and increased intraocular pressure. It can lead to underlying damage to the eye structures causing vision changes, eye pain and halos. It can be of different types such as open angle and congenital glaucoma, based on the intraocular pressure changes. This condition is clinically investigated by an ophthalmologist using diagnostic aids such as tonometry, ophthalmoscopy, gonioscopy, and visual field tests. A customized treatment plan is advised, which includes eye pressure lowering medications, laser or incisional surgeries, and a combination of multiple treatments. Regular follow-ups, maintenance of healthy lifestyle habits and management of underlying medical conditions can significantly improve the condition. Adherence to post operative care instructions plays a major role in quick recovery. Without treatment of glaucoma, there is a high potential to acquire blindness and vision loss.
