Coronary Artery Disease CAD :
Coronary artery disease is a disease that causes blockage in the coronary arteries due to accumulation of plaque in the coronary arteries. Coronary arteries mainly function to supply oxygen rich blood to the heart. This coronary artery disease progresses to stable angina which causes temporary chest pain during emotional distress or physical activity and shortness of breath during light physical activity. CAD is classified into several types such as stable ischemic heart disease and acute coronary syndrome. Atherosclerosis is the major cause of CAD. The potential risk factors for coronary artery disease are autoimmune diseases like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, not exercising regularly, improper sleep, high blood pressure, high LDL, low HDL, anemia, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, sleep disorders like sleep apnea, metabolic syndrome, endometriosis and use of hormonal birth control. The treatment methods to manage coronary artery disease involves medications to manage the risk factors and symptoms, making lifestyle changes and surgical procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
