Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system of the body attacks its own cells, affecting various organs like skin, joints, kidneys etc. Although the exact cause of lupus is unknown, the risk factors include genetics, environmental factors, female hormones like estrogen, vitamin D deficiency, sunlight ,viral infections,stress, smoking etc,. Lupus is much common in females compared to males. The signs and symptoms depend on the organ involved which may include malar rash or butterfly shaped rash, joint pain and swelling, hair loss, kidney problems that may lead to renal failure, fever, mouth ulcers, chest pain, psychosis and cognitive problems in some people effected. Management is to prevent flare ups and maintain remission via medications like corticosteroids, immunosuppresants, NSAID's , sun protection ,good diet and exercise etc.
