Hypothyroidism in Adults :
Hypothyroidism is a medical condition in which there is a low level of thyroid hormone necessary for the body as the thyroid gland doesn't synthesize sufficient levels due to various conditions. It is most commonly seen in adults (female>males) and risk factors include genetics, family history, autoimmune conditions (Hashimoto's thyroiditis), iodine deficiency, thyroid gland damage due to surgery, radiation , certain medications like lithium(psychiatric medication), thyroiditis, nodules etc. Signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism includes fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, intolerance to cold, depression, muscle weakness, constipation, hair loss, menstrual cycle abnormalities, fertility problems etc. Management is via medication to replace thyroid hormone and regular monitoring of the hormone levels (T3,T4,TSH) is necessary and other supportive care.
