Ectopic pregnancy is as an emergency condition where the fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tube. The factors responsible for causing ectopic pregnancy include if the patient was born with an irregularly shaped fallopian tube, damage to the fallopian tubes from a sexually transmitted infection, scar tissue, a growth blocking the fallopian tube, adhesions, or inflammation from a prior pelvic surgery. Ectopic pregnancy is diagnosed by performing diagnostic tests like urine tests, blood tests, and an ultrasound exam. The treatment options to manage ectopic pregnancy include using medications like methotrexate and surgical procedures to remove the ectopic pregnancy, if the fallopian tube has ruptured or if there is a risk of rupture.
