Diabetic foot is a complication of uncontrolled diabetes in the feet, often due to nerve damage (neuropathy), poor circulation and impaired healing. It can be diabetic neuropathic foot, diabetic vascular foot (poor circulation leading to ulcers, gangrene, and amputation), diabetic neuroischemic foot. Signs and symptoms include numbness or tingling, pain or burning sensation,fatigue, ulcers or wounds, redness, swelling, warmth, tenderness, foul odor, blackening of skin (gangrene) and the risk factors include poor blood sugar control, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, age (older adults). It is necessary to address the symptoms and manage accordingly to prevent complications like amputation, infections like osteomyelitis, sepsis, gangrene,ulcer recurrence etc,. which includes wound care, dressings,antibiotics, pain management, blood sugar control, cessation of smoking and surgical intervention like debridement, amputation, revascularization etc., if necessary.
