Meningitis :
Meninges are the membranous covering surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Meningioma aka meningeal tumor is a slow growing tumor that forms from the meninges. Risk factors include exposure to ionizing radiation such as during radiation therapy, neurofibromatasis type 2 , family history, genetic mutations , hormonal influences etc., Signs and symptoms of meningioma usually depends on the area in which the tumor is present (tumor compress the surrounding tissue causing the symptoms) that include headaches, seizures, progressive weakness , numbness, paralysis in arms and legs , incontinence, tinnitus, hearing loss, blurred vision, double vision, personality changes , memory changes, diffulty in speech and swallowing etc,.
Meningioma can be diagnosed by imaging tests like CT, MRI scans, neurological examoination, genetic testing (for NF2 etc.). Management is observation through regular scans, surgery (tumor removal ), radiation therapy (external beam or stereotactic radiosurgery), chemotherapy, anti epileptics to control the seizures and other supportive care.
