Carotid Angiogram :
A carotid angiogram is an imaging test for the carotid arteries. The carotid arteries are the large blood vessels that pass through the neck. These arteries are responsible for delivering oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the brain. A carotid angiogram is required when a patient experiences the symptoms of a stroke like numbness, loss of vision and loss of strength in one side of the body. A carotid angiogram can help doctors identify any blockages in the carotid arteries.
The test involves inserting a thin tube called a catheter into the carotid arteries. The tube may be inserted via the arm or groin and guided into the carotid arteries with special scanning equipment. When the catheter reaches the carotid arteries, a contrast dye is injected into the arteries. Then, X-ray scans are taken which capture images of the arteries as revealed by the contrast dye.
