Good Morning, Doctors. My cousin brother is in the 8th standard. He has tonsillitis, which is causing him throat pain. Tonsillitis has spread over time and caused discomfort every time something cold or other food is consumed. How should he proceed? Is it treatable with medications, or is surgery required? Please explain.
Hello, having repeated tonsil infection, which causes severe pain and high fever and requires the patient to take antibiotics more than 3 times a year, is termed chronic tonsillitis. With each infection, the tonsil becomes a permanent seat for the bad bacteria, and in favourable environments, it expresses itself and causes tonsillitis. These acute episodes are treated with medicines, but there are certain criteria to know if tonsillectomy (surgical removal of tonsils) needs to be done, which can be assessed by an experienced ENT surgeon. These days, there have been many technological advancements in the medical field, and tonsillectomy is not at all a painful procedure due to our modern equipment for the surgery.
