Chickenpox :
Chicken pox is an infection caused by varicella-zoster virus. It is a highly contagious and rapidly transmissible infection, predominantly seen in children. It also occurs in adults who are not vaccinated against chickenpox or have not developed the infection in childhood. Chicken pox manifests clinically as a generalized body rash which gradually progresses to pus-filled blisters, high- grade fever associated with itching of the rash, headache, malaise and appetite changes. Conservative medical management is made with antiviral drugs like acyclovir, over-the-counter painkillers, antihistamines, rest and adequate hydration. Chicken pox generally weakens the immune system, if left untreated, chicken pox can cause secondary complications such as pneumonia in adults and a rare possibility of encephalitis. Preventative measures are Varivax vaccination, good hygiene practices and avoidance of close contact with infected individuals.
