Hematuria :
If an individual has blood cells in the urine, it is said that the individual has hematuria. The urine may have too few blood cells to be visible to the eye, but the cells become visible in a urine test. In some cases, there may be enough blood cells for the urine to turn red. Hematuria can be a sign of problems in the urinary system. It can be accompanied by other symptoms like frequent urination, burning during urination and lack of control over urination. Hematuria usually occurs due to an infection or stones in the urinary tract.
A doctor can determine the underlying cause of hematuria with tests like a physical exam, pelvic exam, urinalysis, cystoscopy and various imaging tests. The treatment usually involves medications. Depending on the underlying cause, a urologist may prescribe antibiotics, pain medications, blood pressure tablets or hormone medication. In some cases, chemotherapy or immunotherapy may be required.
