Tachycardia :
Tachycardia is described as a heart problem, where the heart beats abnormally, more than 100 beats per minute, when at rest. Tachycardia is categorized into two types, namely, ventricular tachycardias and supraventricular tachycardias (SVTs). SVT encompasses premature atrial contractions and atrial fibrillation. Ventricular tachycardias include ventricular fibrillation and torsades de pointes. The symptoms of tachycardia include increased heart rate, heart palpitations, dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, fainting, fatigue, shortness of breath, and chest pain. The causative factors of tachycardia include high blood pressure, dehydration, low blood sugar, pregnancy, heart conditions like coronary artery disease, stress, and anemia. To diagnose tachycardia, several investigations such as a Holter monitor, an EKG, a stress test, a tilt table test, an electrophysiology test, an echo-cardiogram, blood tests, genetic tests, and cardiac imaging are conducted and evaluated. The management of tachycardia involves options like prescribing medications (beta blockers and calcium channel blockers), ablation, cadioversion, vagal maneuvers, pacemaker, left atrial appendage closure and implantable cardiac defibrillator.
