Sinusitis :
Sinusitis is described as inflammation of sinus tissues, which results in too much production of nasal mucus. Sinus cavities are air filled spaces in the regions of the cheeks, forehead and nose. Depending on the duration, sinusitis is divided into various types such as acute, sub acute, chronic and recurrent sinusitis. Based on the causative factor, sinusitis is classified into bacterial, viral and fungal sinusitis. The presenting complaints of sinusitis include post nasal drip, pain in the teeth, fever, bad breath, runny nose with thick yellow or green mucus, cough, facial pressure, bad taste in the mouth, stuffy nose, headache, ear pain and tiredness. The triggering factors of sinusitis include common cold, flu, nasal and seasonal allergies, streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, moraxella catarrhalis bacteria and haemophilus influenzae bacteria. The management of sinusitis involves various methods such as taking decongestants, over the counter cold and allergy medications, nasal saline rinses, antibiotics, oral or topical decongestants and drinking plenty of fluids.
