Hepatitis B :
Hepatitis B is a serious infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis B virus. It can be spread through contact with infected blood, unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected person, sharing needles, or from an infected mother to her baby while in the womb during pregnancy. Hepatitis B is one of the common causes of liver diseases in India. Some patients may be asymptomatic, while others can present with fever, tiredness, decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, dark colored urine, and yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes. The duration of this infection can be acute which might last for few weeks, or it might be chronic for years. In chronic hepatitis B, there is high possibility of liver damage, cirrhosis, or liver cancer. Treatment is dependent according to the stage at which it is diagnosed. Acute hepatitis B is simply treated with supportive care and rest. Treatment includes administration of antiviral medications in chronic cases and periodic consultations with the doctor.
