Diabetes in Pregnancy :
Diabetes in pregnancy, also called Gestational diabetes, is a condition characterized by development of elevated blood glucose levels during pregnancy. Pregnant women with gestational diabetes experience symptoms like frequent urination, excessive thirst, fatigue and nausea. Unlike normal diabetes, gestational diabetes gets resolved on its own after pregnancy. Pregnant women with obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, personal history of GD, PCOS, and prediabetes are at higher risk of acquiring gestational diabetes. It can be diagnosed by Endocrinologists and Gynecologists through Glucose challenge test and Glucose tolerance tests. Treatment plans for gestational diabetes include continuous monitoring of the fetus, regular review of blood sugar levels, and medical management. Gestational diabetes may lead to complications like increased chances of C-section, Preeclampsia and rarely acquiring diabetes in later life, and may also lead to increased birth weight, breathing concerns, obesity, premature birth, and type 2 diabetes in later life in the fetus, hence needs early and regular follow up of Endocrinologist for better management.
