Imperforate anus is congenital birth abnormality, recognized by lack of anal malformation. It has difficulty with anal opening, rectum and nerves responsible for bowel movement. It has different manifestation in girls and boys. There are various types of imperforate anus such as anal atresia (no opening), wrong place of opening in cases like rectroperineal fistula, rectourethral fistula in boys, rectovaginal fistula, rectovestibular and cloaca in girls. This condition is usually recognized misplacement of anal opening or lack of it, baby with no BM after 48 hours, swollen abdomen, passing BM (bowel movement) around openings of vagina or scrotum/penis. It is diagnosed by physical examination and diagnostic radiographic imaging studies. This condition is surgically corrected by posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP).
