Thalassemia is an acquired blood disorder that leads to abnormal levels of hemoglobin which is the oxygen carrying protein. Thalassemia often presents in two forms namely Alpha and Beta . Symptoms include dark urine, abdominal swelling, slow growth, pale skin, increased risk of infection, iron overload, and bone deformities.
Although Individuals who are asymptomatic require no treatment, others may be treated with growth hormone therapy, bone marrow transplantation and red blood cell transfusion depending on the severity of the symptoms. Liver and heart damage, enlarged spleen, prone to infections, and osteoporosis are the common complications associated with Thalassemia .
