Hydrocephalus :

Hydrocephalus is a condition where there is an accumulation of excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain, leading to increased intracranial pressure and potentially causing life threatening complications. In babies it may be seen as a rapid increase in head size leading to seizures, vomiting , sleepiness, poor feeding , bulging fontanelles in infants downward pointing of eyes etc,. In older people it presents with headaches, double vision, poor balance and loss of coordination , urinary incontinence in some people and mental impairment. It can occur at birth or may occur later in life. Hydrocephalus is associated with birth defects that include neural tube defects and those that result in aqueductal stenosis and other causes being meningitis, brain tumors, traumatic brain injury, IVH (Intraventricular hemorrhage), subachnoid hemorrhage , stroke etc,.

Diagnosis includes physical and neurological examination, imaging studies like ultrasound (in infants), CT scan , MRI, Lumbar puncture etc. Management of hydrocephalus depends on identifying the cause and treating it that may include VP shunt(ventriculoperitoneal shunt ), ETV and medical management with diuretics, anticonvulsants etc. Rehabilitation with physical therapy and or occupational therapy may be required.
