ASD Surgery involves either cardiac catheterization or a heart surgery, depending on the size, location, and severity of the defect. In cardiac catheterization, a special implant is placed into the hole such that it flattens against the atrial wall to close and seal the defective hole permanently.
A heart surgery is required in case the ASD is large or situated too close to the wall of the heart, making it difficult to safely insert a device. Few weeks after the ASD surgery the cardiologist will ask for a follow up to check on your child's progress.
