Whipples Surgery :
Whipples surgery is a treatment for pancreatic cancer. More specifically, Whipples surgery is a procedure in which a doctor removes a tumour from the head of the pancreas. This procedure can only be performed if the tumour is present in the head of the pancreas and the cancer has not spread to other organs. A Whipple surgery can also treat cancers in the bile duct and duodenum.
An oncologist may provide chemotherapy or radiation therapy before suggesting this surgery. The doctor may advise avoiding certain foods, medications and supplements in the days before the surgery. The patient must fast for eight hours before the procedure. The whipples surgery is a highly complex procedure that is usually performed as an open surgery. A large cut is made in the belly and the pancreas is removed. Surrounding organs such as the gall bladder, duodenum and parts of the bile duct are also removed.
