Otosclerosis :
Otosclerosis refers to the abnormal bone growth in the inner ear or middle ear, and interferes with the ability of sound to travel. Over a long period of time, otosclerosis can lead to hearing loss. The presenting complaints of otosclerosis include a ringing sensation in the ears (also called tinnitus), gradual hearing loss, vertigo, balance issues, and dizziness. The risk factors for otosclerosis are higher in females with a similar family history and also in pregnant women who were previously diagnosed with a similar condition. People who are suffering from a disease called osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) are more prone to otosclerosis, too. An otolaryngologist diagnoses otosclerosis after evaluating hearing tests like the tympanogram and audiogram. The treatment modalities to deal with otosclerosis include recommending hearing aids to hear and communicate, surgical procedures such as by cochlear implants and stapedectomy to improve hearing.
