Jaundice :
Jaundice is a liver problem that is characterized by yellowish discoloration of the skin mucous membranes and eyes due to the accumulation of bile pigment, bilirubin. Jaundice is categorized into three types of jaundice, such as pre hepatic jaundice, hepatic jaundice and post hepatic jaundice. The primary causes of jaundice include hepatitis, gallstones, Epstein- Barr virus, hemolytic anemias, gallbladder cancer, inflammation of gallbladder, alcohol consumption, medications such as pencillin, oral contraceptives, acetaminophen toxicity, estrogenic or anabolic steroids, autoimmune disorders, pancreatic tumour and rare genetic metabolic defects. The presenting complains of jaundice include yellowish discoloration of skin and white part of eyes, pain in abdomen, flu-like symptoms, fever, chills, weight loss, itchy skin, dark- colored urine and pale- colored stools. To evaluate jaundice, the nature of bilirubin is identified by measuring the levels of bilirubin, checking for bruising and palmar erythema, spider angiomas, examining the size of liver and tenderness using biopsy, ultrasound and CT.
