Gonorrhoea :
Gonorrhea is a bacterial sexually transmissible infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It primarily involves the genitourinary tract and may be transferred to the throat and rectum. The mode of transmission with this bacterium is sexual contact with an infected individual through anal, vaginal, or oral sex. Most presentations are variable, though most women present without any symptoms altogether. In women the patient will experience painful urination, increased vaginal or penile discharge, and pelvic pain. To men symptoms present in swollen testicles or the discharge from the penis. If left untreated gonorrhea poses some serious complications, such as pelvic Inflammatory disease in females that culminates into infertility, and epididymitis in males.
Diagnosis is done either on urine tests or swabs from the affected site. Treatment is possible with antibiotics. Disease transmission or recurrence should be managed by reporting of sexual partners and provision of safe sex measures. Regular screening of the viral markers need to be done and an urologist consultation need to be obtained if the symptoms persists continuously more than two weeks.

What is the Best Treatment for Gonorrhoea in Kolkata?
The best doctors for gonorrhoea treatment advise that the best treatment for gonorrhoea involves using antibiotics. This is caused by infection with the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Prompt and appropriate treatment is crucial to cure the infection, prevent complications, and reduce the risk of transmission to others. Commonly used antibiotics for the treatment include:
- Ceftriaxone: This is usually the preferred antibiotic for treating gonorrhoea. It is administered as a single intramuscular injection. Ceftriaxone has effectively treated most gonorrhoea infections and remains a reliable choice. In some cases, oral cefixime may be used as an alternative.
- Azithromycin: In addition to ceftriaxone, azithromycin is often prescribed to treat gonorrhoea, as well as chlamydia, which commonly co-infects individuals with gonorrhoea. Azithromycin is taken as a single oral dose.
Why is Gonorrhoea harder to treat now?
Gonorrhoea has become harder to treat due to the emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant strains of the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium. Resistance to antibiotics is a natural phenomenon observed in many bacteria, including Neisseria Gonorrhoeae. Some responsible factors include:
- Overuse and Misuse of Antibiotics: Overuse and misuse of antibiotics result in a situation when bacteria not killed by antibiotics survive and pass on their resistance genes to their offspring.
- High Mutation Rate: Neisseria Gonorrhoeae has a relatively high mutation rate, which means it can quickly develop mutations that confer antibiotic resistance.
- Limited Treatment Options: Treatment has relied on relatively few antibiotics. Resistance has developed to multiple classes of antibiotics, including penicillins, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, and others.
- Global Travel and Trade: International travel and trade facilitate the rapid spread of antibiotic-resistant strains of gonorrhoea across borders.
- Lack of New Antibiotics: There needs to be more new antibiotics developed to treat gonorrhoea, which has limited the options available for treatment.
