What are the causes of Bell's Palsy?
The exact cause of Bell's Palsy is not fully understood, but inflammation or viral infection affecting the facial nerve or the seventh cranial nerve can result in the condition. Some factors and conditions that can result in Bell's Palsy include:
- Viral Infections: herpes simplex virus (HSV), which causes cold sores, and other viruses, such as the varicella-zoster virus that causes chickenpox and shingles and the Epstein-Barr virus, are often believed to be responsible.
- Autoimmune Reactions: an autoimmune response in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the facial nerve.
- Genetic Predisposition: Some individuals are more susceptible to developing Bell's Palsy than others due to genetic factors.
- Environmental Triggers: Stress, trauma, and environmental toxins may play a role in causing the condition
- Other Infections: such as Lyme disease and sarcoidosis, are linked to facial nerve dysfunction and can sometimes cause symptoms similar to Bell's Palsy.
What are the symptoms of Bell's Palsy?
