A gastrosurgeon is a specialist doctor who deals with the management of diseases that affect the digestive system with surgical treatments. A gastrosurgeon is known as a surgical gastroenterologist. A gastrosurgeon is qualified with a graduation in MBBS, followed by post-graduation in MS, and DNB in surgical gastroenterology. A gastrosurgeon will deal with the diseases that are affecting the organs like the stomach, liver, esophagus, large intestine, pancreas, small intestine, gall bladder, anus, and rectum. There are some specific diseases that can be treated by a gastrosurgeon, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), pancreatitis, peptic ulcers, Crohn's disease, gastric ulcers, diverticulitis, appendicitis, gastrointestinal cancers, inflammatory bowel disease, gall bladder disease, hemorrhoids, and hernias. A gastrosurgeon specializes in performing surgeries like colonoscopy and endoscopy. They will be trained in the removal of tumors which are seen in the digestive tract, and treat peptic ulcers with a surgery known as vagotomy or gastrectomy.
