Shortness of Breath :
Shortness of breath in medical terminology is also known as dyspnea. There are several reasons for dyspnea, which might include heart conditions like heart failure, inflammation of heart muscle or arrhythmias, and lung conditions like asthma: infection and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Shortness of breath also can happen if the patient is anemic or even due to anxiety. Signs of dyspnea include palpitations, wheezing, and excessive breathing. Investigations that might be suggested for a patient to rule out the cause of dyspnea may include chest X-ray, 2D echocardiogram, CT scan, lung function test, cardiopulmonary exercise test, and basic blood investigations. Treatment of shortness of breath includes medication like bronchodilators, oxygen therapies, and regular exercise. However, the underlying cause needs to be ruled out and treated. Usually, dyspnea is not life-threatening, but if it is associated with any other complaint like chest pain and palpitations, it should be taken seriously, and the patient needs to be hospitalized immediately.
