Pterygium :
Pterygium is a wing like growth that begins at the nasal side of the conjunctiva and passes to the pupillary area. Also called as solar keratosis, it shows up as pink or white bump mainly caused by sunlight, wind and dust. Besides, people who expose their eyes a lot of to dusts and sun rays especially those who do not wear eye protection gear are prone to the disease. Some of the signs include eye redness, eye inflammation, and the feeling of having an object in the eye. Depending on the seriousness it may not pose any pain and in worst situations does not warrant any treatment. However, when the growth is irritating or impacts the vision, eye drops that coat the eye surfaces, or anti-inflammatory agents can be administered. In some of the worst cases, surgery to remove the growths might be necessary. To reduce the incidences of pterygium, the patient should avoid going outside without protecting the eyes from UV light using eyewear and hats. People with special risks for this condition have to see an ophthalmologist or an optometrist for routine check ups of the eyes.
