Impetigo :
Impetigo is an easily spreadable bacterial skin infection caused by Staphylococcus species. It is most commonly seen in infants and children. It occurs through direct contact with skin, contaminated objects, poor hygiene practices and environment. Impetigo manifests as reddish bumps or blisters with ruptured yellow/white crusty appearance, severe itching and discomfort, fever and swollen lymph nodes. A dermatologist can assess the extent of spread by physical examination and also by investigations such as bacterial cultures. It can be easily treated by topical applications of antibiotic creams, oral antibiotics, well maintained hygiene practices and avoiding direct contact with infected objects. If left untreated, this can lead to further complications like cellulitis, abscesses and scarring of the affected area.
