Ventricular Septal Defect :
Generally, the lower chambers of the heart are called as ventricles. A ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a hole in the wall that separates the ventricles. The presence of this hole in the wall causes the blood that is rich in oxygen to move back to the lungs instead of being pumped to the rest of the body.
The symptoms of a ventricular septal defect depends on the size of the defect (hole), and also, the presence of any other heart conditions. A small VSD may never cause any symptoms. Some of the signs and symptoms that a baby may have VSD include, fast breathing or breathlessness when crying or eating, slow or no physical growth, no weight gain, becomes tired when eating or playing. Symptoms of a VSD in adults include, shortness of breath when exercising, and the presence of a whooshing heart sound or murmur.
VSD, when identified and treated early, can prevent complications from developing. Talk to your doctor if you or your baby have symptoms of a ventricular septal defect.
