Twin Pregnancy :
A twin pregnancy is a type of multiple pregnancy where a woman carries two fetuses in her uterus. The chance of twin pregnancy increases with family history, race (more common in African Americans), age (more common in women over 35), fertility treatments (IVF, ovulation induction), multiple sexual partners, previous multiple pregnancy. Twin pregnancy also has severe morning sickness, weight gain and bloating, fatigue and exhaustion, back pain and pelvic pressure, frequent urination, braxton Hicks contractions, abnormal fetal movement compared to normal pregnancy. Twin pregnancy is also associated with more complications and is considered a high risk pregnancy ie,. preterm labour (twins are often born prematurely increasing the risk of respiratory distress), low birth weight, gestational diabetes, hypertension which may lead to pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, placenta previa, fetal growth restriction, stillbirth, cerebral palsy, TTTS (twin to twin transfusion syndrome ), post partum depression etc,.
Twin pregnancy needs good prenatal care and monitoring, regular fetal ultrasound scans to monitor growth, bed rest or hospitalization (if necessary, cesarean section (often recommended) , vaginal delivery (in some cases), postpartum care and support.
