Diabetes in Pregnancy :
Diabetes during pregnancy, also known as gestational diabetes, is a condition that develops during pregnancy due to the increased buildup of sugars in the blood. It occurs when the placenta is unable to make insulin, which helps maintain the correct amount of glucose in the body. It appears during 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy. Factors that influence the risk of developing gestational diabetes are heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, history of gestational diabetes in previous pregnancy, family history of type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome, prediabetes, and advanced maternal age. Symptoms include frequent urination, tiredness, excessive thirst, and nausea. Complications, if untreated, are C-sections and preeclampsia. Risk factors for gestational diabetes are increased birth weight, breathing problems, hypoglycemia, obesity, and premature birth. It can be managed by avoiding processed foods and sugary drinks, having a healthy balance of proteins, carbohydrates, fiber, and fats, eating smaller meals, and scheduling meals at the same time each day.
