Bow Legs :

Bow legs, known medically as genu varum, is a condition in which the legs curve out at the knees, allowing someone to have a distinct gap between the lower legs and knees when one stands with one's feet together. It can be a result of normal development in an infant who grows his bones. However, in older children or adults, it results from such diseases as rickets, Blount's disease, or malformations caused by injury. Sometimes, deficiency of vitamin D or the lack of sufficient calcium supplementation also leads to this cause of softened bones that leads to bowing of the legs. There can be an odd walk, knee or hip region pain, and one leg may be larger than the other.

Sometimes it causes intense pain in the joints or arthritis when more severe. The treatment varies from the etiology to the degree of the problem. Some children may require no treatment at all since the condition heals spontaneously in most cases. For more serious deformity, correction may be achieved with corrective surgery or orthodontic braces to resolve the malposition of the bone. Proper nutrition, mainly adequate levels of calcium and vitamin D, may help prevent further worsening of the disease.
