AV Fistula :

An AV fistula is also known as an arteriovenous fistula. It is a procedure performed where surgeons connects the artery to the vein. This is usually done in the arm. The advantage of this connection is blood flows directly and under a higher pressure from the artery into the vein so that the vein gets stronger and wider over time. This strong vein can be used for dialysis, which is a procedure for treating kidney failure where blood is cleaned out of the body. Usually the fistula is created by a vascular surgeon for patients who requires long-term dialysis . This minor surgery is done under local anesthesia. The fistula can take a few weeks after surgery for it to become a functional one before it will gets ready for use. Once it is functional, the risk of infections or complications relating to fistulas is way lower than it is in other modalities of dialysis accesses, such as catheters or grafts.
