Cleft Lip :
A cleft lip is a common birth defect in which a child is born with a gap in the upper lip. It occurs because the child's lips do not develop correctly inside the womb. The gap that occurs in a cleft lip may be small or large. A large cleft lip usually involves a gap that extends into the nostril. In some cases, children affected by a cleft lip have two gaps in the lips instead of one.
Cleft lip can develop in a child if the mother is exposed to chemicals during pregnancy. This defect can also develop if a pregnant female does not consume essential prenatal nutrients. A child with a cleft lip may find it difficult to feed. Moreover, the gap in the lips can result in dental and speech problems as the baby grows. A cleft lip is diagnosed in a child's first check-up after birth. The treatment of this condition requires surgery in which the gap is closed.
