Leprosy :
Leprosy also known as Hansen's disease is a chronic medical condition caused by bacteria Mycobacterium leprae (M.leprae) that often has a very long incubation period and effects multiple organs like skin,nerves and mucous membranes in the body. The risk factors for leprosy include weak immunity ,low socioeconomic conditions and unhealthy lifestyle. Most of the affected individuals do not show any symptoms as the bacteria has low pathogenicity, but the effected individuals present with hypopigmented lesions on the body,numbness, tingling in the hands and feet due to loss of sensation as the bacteria affects the nerves, muscle weakness, dry eyes, blurriness, enlarged lymphnodes, etc. Management is by antibiotics via multidrug therapy (MDT) over 8-12 months, physical therapy and other supportive care.
