Surgical Oncologist :
A surgical oncologist is a specialist who treats cancer patients by performing surgery. The responsibilities of a surgical oncologist include diagnosing patients by performing procedures such as a biopsy. A biopsy involves removing a small piece of the unusual growth from the body and analyzing it in a lab. The biopsy not only helps confirm a cancer diagnosis but it also helps determine the stage of the disease. A surgical oncologist then works with a team of other specialists such as radiation oncologists and medical oncologists to treat the patient.
A surgical oncologist is qualified with an MBBS and an MCh or DNB in Surgical Oncology. Some of these specialists pursue fellowships as an alternative to a qualification such as MCh. Surgical oncologists can treat their patients with open surgery, laser surgery and cryosurgery.
