Rickets :
Rickets is a condition in children in which their bones become soft, making them bend and break easily. It is mainly due to extreme deficiency of vitamin D. The causes of rickets can be lack of vitamin D, consuming diet with low calcium, lack of adequate exposure to sunlight, and sometimes, it is inherited. The symptoms of this condition are bowing of legs, pigeon chest, bone pain, widening of knees, growth delays, cavities in teeth, seizures in case of extremely low levels of calcium, and thickened wrist bones and ankles. Diagnosis of rickets is done by physical examination of the child and by pressing the bones, X-rays are taken to identify the deformities in the bones. Most of the cases of rickets are treated by giving vitamin D and calcium supplements. In case of bow legs, the doctor advises braces to position the body, and surgery is advised when there are severe bone deformities.
