Peripheral Artery Disease :
Peripheral Artery Disease is caused by obstructions or blockage of arteries in the limbs. Mostly seen in the lower limbs. This occurs mainly as a result of medical conditions, which may include atherosclerosis, which results from fats depositing on the inner sides of the arteries. Atherosclerosis may lead to a minimal flow of blood to the limbs. Symptoms include pain in the limbs increasing during walking, numbness of the limb, and, in some cases, ulcers may also be seen. These other risk factors include smoking, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and uncontrolled hypertension. Diagnosis is made by physical examination, basic blood investigations, and imaging procedures like venous and arterial Doppler scans, ultrasound, or even an angiography if required. Management usually involves a change in lifestyle, and drugs to increase blood flow, such as antiplatelets and anticoagulants, would be advised, and in more severe cases, surgery or angioplasty would also be advised to clear off the blockage. Peripheral artery disease should not be left untreated as it might even lead to limb ischemia, leading to amputation of the limb.
