Hip Replacement :
Hip replacement is a major surgery in which an orthopaedic surgeon removes the hip joint from the body. The natural hip joint is replaced with an artificial joint. The replacement bone may be made from ceramic, plastic or metal. The procedure is performed to provide relief from stiffness and pain in the hips that do not reduce with conservative treatments. The new hip can reduce the symptoms and make it easier to perform daily activities and improve the quality of life.
Before the procedure begins, the patient is put to sleep with anaesthesia. Then, the surgeon cuts open the hip and removes the bone and cartilage. Finally, the surgeon inserts the artificial hip into the body and closes the hip with stitches. A hip replacement procedure can take up to two hours.
