Herpes is a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) mainly affecting the mouth(oral herpes), face, genitals(genital herpes) and other organs and appear as a small group of blisters. It is caused by viruses HSV1, HSV2 (genital herpes). It can occur due to direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person, sexual transmission (STD), mother to child during childbirth , sharing needles and also reactivation of the latent virus etc. Signs and symptoms of the herpes include painful blisters or sores on the genitals (genital herpes), cold sores(lips), herpes keratitis that effect the eyes, itching, burning sensation and swollen lymph nodes etc. Management is mainly conservative by medications to treat pain like paracetamol, ibuprofen, topical ointments, avoid close contact with an infected person, practicing safe sex, antivirals like acyclovir and prevent recurrence.
