Colposcopy :
A colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure in which a gynaecologist examines the cervix. The cervix is the lower part of the womb that is present inside the vagina. Colposcopy also involves an examination of the walls of the vagina. A gynaecologist may perform this exam if a female has unusual results in a Pap smear test or a pelvic exam.
A colposcopy involves using a light-equipped microscope known as a colposcope. It is inserted into the vagina and allows the doctor to look for any abnormal cells and growths. A gynaecologist may take a sample of any abnormal tissues and send them to a lab for further testing. In this way, a colposcopy can reveal whether pre-cancerous or cancerous cells have developed in a female's reproductive system.
