Neurosurgeons treat diseases and disorders of the nervous system. This includes organs like brain, spinal cord and the nerves that arise from it. Neurosurgeons do critical treatment with also involves complex surgical operations. They deal with conditions like tumors of brain and spinal cord, aneurysm of brain, hemorrhages and hydrocephalus. Neurosurgeons either perform various surgeries with craniotomy approach where a portion of skull is removed or use a minimally invasive approach where an endoscope is passed via nasal cavity. Among spine surgeries, they treat herniated discs, vertebral fractures and spinal deformities. Neurosurgeons perform reconstructive surgeries where there is peripheral nerve injury affecting function of limbs. Neurosurgeons use a method called radiosurgery where the tumors and abnormal outgrowths are removed with gamma knife so that there is no additional injury to these critical structures.
