An eye specialist is an ophthalmologist or eye doctor who deals with the diagnosis and treatment of infections and diseases affecting the eye. An eye specialist will be qualified with a graduation in MBBS, followed by post-graduation in MS or MD in ophthalmology. The common diseases that are treated by an eye specialist include diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macular degeneration, eye infections, cataracts, astigmatism, corneal diseases, conjunctivitis, amblyopia, refractive errors, blepharitis, retinal detachment, strabismus, and genetic eye conditions. When the symptoms of eye diseases, such as double vision, halos or glares around lights, flashes, blurred vision, changes in perception of color, persistent eye pain, difficulty in night vision, excess tears, squinting, redness of the eye, frequent headaches, dry eyes, occur, one should consult an eye specialist for the proper treatment. When there are conditions such as severe pain with sudden loss of vision, severe headache with vomiting, or any injury to the eyes, one should consult an eye doctor for immediate management.
