Gastrectomy :
Gastrectomy is a procedure in which the stomach is removed from the body, either completely or entirely. It is performed to treat problems like tumours in the stomach, peptic ulcer disease, injuries and gastritis. The procedure is also performed as a bariatric surgery to help people lose weight. The surgery is performed under anaesthesia, so the patient does not feel any pain. Some patients are hooked up to a nasogastric tube to remove the contents of the stomach before any cuts are made. Gastrectomy can be performed as an open surgery with a large cut or via many tiny cuts as a laparoscopic procedure. If the patient has stomach cancer, then the lymph nodes may also be removed. After the stomach is removed, the surgeon will connect the food pipe to the small intestine.
