Loss of smell :
Loss of smell can also be called anosmia. Loss of smell can be described as a symptom of certain disease conditions, which can lead to an inability to sense smells. Loss of smell can occur due to various conditions, which include common cold, nasal congestion, nasal polyps, sinus infections, deviated septum, influenza, COVID-19, and hay fever. There are conditions which will affect the receptors that will be present in the nose such as brain tumors, parkinson's disease, alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, high blood pressure, sjogren's syndrome, kallmann syndrome. The diagnosis of the cause of the loss of smell can be done based on the testing to smell odors by ENT specialists. They will do the odor identification tests which includes sniffing and identification of various substances. There are diagnostic tests such as an MRI scan, and CT scan. The loss of smell can be treated by managing the underlying condition that is causing it. There are complications that are seen with the loss of smell, including inhalation of harmful substances and gases, increased risk with smoke or fire, and food poisoning.
