Black Stool :
Black stool can also be known as melena. When there is the presence of blood in the stools, it can be called black stools. The blood that is passing through the digestive tract changes to a black color. The black stools can occur due to inflammation such as gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, gastrointestinal perforation, erosion of the lining in the stomach, tear in the esophagus, swollen veins in the stomach or esophagus, or stomach cancer. The other causes for black stools include dark food items such as blueberries taken in large quantities, activated charcoal, and iron supplements. The symptoms that can be experienced when there is black stool include pain in the abdomen, back pain, chest pain, and vomiting of blood. The diagnosis is dependent on the cause of black stools and will be diagnosed through tests such as a blood test, a CT angiogram, a CT scan, and an endoscopy. Management of black stools can be done by transfusion of blood to compensate for the loss of blood, and medications are used to manage the ulcers and other gastric problems.
