Thalassemia is a genetic disorder of the blood that results in abnormal levels of hemoglobin (oxygen carrying protein). Thalassemia is categorized into two main types Alpha and Beta. Thalassemia characterized by symptoms such as dark urine, abdominal swelling, slow growth, pale skin, increased risk of infection, iron overload, and bone deformities. Individuals who are asymptomatic require no treatment, while others may be treated with growth hormone therapy, red blood cell transfusion, and bone marrow transplantation depending on the severity of the symptoms. Liver and heart damage, enlarged spleen, prone to infections, and osteoporosis are the common complications associated with this condition.
