Angioplasty / Balloon Angioplasty :
An angioplasty is a modern and advanced heart procedure. The procedure involves clearing the arteries of the heart of any build-ups and blockages. It is usually performed to treat a condition called atherosclerosis, in which fat and cholesterol clog up the arteries of the heart.
During the procedure, the patient is put to sleep and a thin tube-like device is inserted into the heart. The device is usually inserted through the groin and guided into the heart. When the device reaches the point where there is a blockage, the balloon at the tip of the device is activated. When activated, the balloon expands and pushes the build-up away, clearing the artery. Angioplasty does not require much cutting or stitching. After the arteries are cleared, the doctor may place a small tube in the area of the blockage.
